Fullmetal Alchemist (FMA) is the history of the Elric's Brothers (Alphonse and Edward) who are looking for the Philosopher's Stone and that's why Edward becomes a state alchemist , so they can have more resources and learn for about the alchemy, for their awesome quest.
After they lose their mother (she has secretly a very serious illnes) and his father had left them a long time ago, they want to bring their mother back with all their alchemy's knowledge, trying the human transmutation (but it's forbidden). This is the reason because Edward loses his right arm and left leg, and Alphonse loose his entire body, and Edward try to recorver it, bu he only could get his brother's soul, and he join it to an armor that was in the place of the transmutation.
They have some relatives whom works doing Automails (type of advanced prosthetic limb) and Alphonse took to Edward there, so they can help his brother.
A man, state alchemist, Roy Mustang was in their town (Resembool) because the Elric's Brother send a lot of letters looking for the alchemist Hohenheim (their father) as the their mother's last wish. Roy Mustang (Flame Alchemist) talks to them and tells them about becoming a state alchemist, with all the benefits that includes, and tempt them to go to the Central City.
When they where in conditions to go to the Central City, they studies to be a state alchemist, and Edward get it. From now on, Edward and Alphonse Elric start looking for the Philosopher's Stone, so they can avoid the equivalent exchange, the law of conservation, the great rule for every alchemist. They want to have their bodies just like their where before the human transmutation.
In their quest, they have to afront a lot of enemies and crazy people, and have to learn the secret history begind of the Philosopher's Stone.
